A Second Chance

Hello! My name is Juan Guerra and I am excited to announce I’m the newest guest blogger on Yes You Can! My purpose here is to share my weight loss story with you and show you that you have the ability to transform your life. My journey to losing weight was very challenging, but also very rewarding. God knew my struggles and depression, so with his amazing and right timing, He placed people in my life that to this day have left a huge impact on me. I want to take this opportunity and help you better yourself. For those who want to transform their lives and lose weight, I will motivate and encourage you to keep going. And for the people who want to maintain their weight, I want to show you fun and creative ways to keep on your ideal weight. I am blessed to say I have gotten major support from family, friends and Yes You Can Diet Plan.  Now it’s my turn to inspire others! Are you ready?

I was 260 lbs. when I graduated from my local University majoring in media communications. I was focusing (still am) working in the entertainment business and ever since I can remember I’ve always wanted to work on a film set. After graduating, I secured an internship that would catapult me into the Hollywood circle and working on a major feature film as graphic designer and web administrator. Because of the long and demanding hours, I was slowly packing weight that would then lead me into depression. But it was in early January 2008 (a few days before my birthday) that my life would change when my mom begged me to seek medical attention for my health.  At only 26-years-old, I was obese at 327 lbs. and according to my doctor, 1) I could die before turning 30 and 2) I was on the edge of a heart of pre-diabetes. She ordered me to sign up at the nearest gym. That same day of my doctor check-up,  my dad accompanied me to the nearest local gym to hire a personal trainer. My emotions were all over the place and I was upset at my parents for having me do something I didn’t agree with. We walked out of the gym with a training and nutrition packet. The next day I met with my personal trainer, Jose Bonilla.

To this day I am reminded of the prayer I prayed as a boy. Being an only child I didn’t grow up with brothers and sisters, but I always prayed for one. God is so good and works at a perfect timing that He placed Jose into my life. Today he is my best friend and the brother I’ve always wanted. Since the first visit, Jose was (and is) very trusting, encouraging, supportive and loving. He was there with me all the way and put me under his wing. I remember having to wake up at 5am every day to go to the gym, six times a week. Jose formulated meal and workout plans that had me dropping 2 pounds a week. He taught me to be patient about my weight loss because I wanted fast results. And when I’d hit plateau, he’d help me with different foods and exercises. One thing that people don’t know about me is that when I say I’m going to do something, I’ll do it and I’ll give you 110%. Jose and I were a success story at the local gym. We were becoming rockstars for our team work.

By early 2009,  I received a surprising e-mail from a client/friend who was on MTV’s Real World. He told me that there was a guy by the name Alejandro Chaban who was looking for a graphic designer and that he’d recommend me to him. I didn’t know who Alejandro was at the time, because I wasn’t in the loop with latin shows/TV. You could say I grew up with Beverly Hills 90210, MTV, Full House and Saturday Morning cartoons. I googled Alejandro and then we got in contact. After collaborating on graphic design ideas, he asked me what I was doing and I mentioned him I was in the process of losing weight, which to my surprise, he was very excited about helping me as well. That’s when he gifted me his book De Gordo A Galan and I couldn’t put it down! Reading his book helped me understand and connect with Alejandro on another level. Here he was, an actor and celebrity living his life to the fullest, and I wanted that same goal. I knew Alejandro was working on something very special that people didn’t know yet about. I like to think that Alejandro mentored me with strategies he would later include in a product that would revolutionize the world with Yes You Can Diet Plan. Goodbye, yo-yo dieting!

Between my personal trainer Jose and Alejandro Chaban, God had worked through them and my parents to give me a second chance at life. Before Yes You Can Diet Plan launched to the public, I had already lost 129 lbs. and had soaked in the knowledge of what they had taught me. When I was officially introduced to YYC, it felt very familiar to me because of what I was taught before. The ‘dieta del Semaforo’ (Stoplight guide) intrigued me the most it’s a nutritional guide that provides an easy-to-follow way to eat all the foods you love. The nutritional guide tells you: When, How Much, and What to eat. This is a fun and creative way to to achieve your weight loss goal in an easy, fun, and healthy way.My goal now is to gain muscle and help people as much as I can with their weight issues. I can relate to them because I went through the same things. I can see their pain, their frustrations, their goals. That sparks something in me and it is my purpose and calling to transform people’s lives.

The Gift of Being Single

Let’s agree to use all our energy in getting along with each other with encouraging words; Don’t drag them down by finding default.” – Romans 14:19

It’s been a year since I’ve been attending CPC, a non-denominational Christian church on the San Francisco peninsula. I also happen to be single. No, I am not trying to get a date through this blog (although, it might help). What I am trying to say is that single people can be part of a unity in church. As I understand it – the church as a community becomes one. Single or married, we are a church family. I see a lot of married couples with families and that makes me wonder when it will be my time. I’m not questioning God. I trust His perfect timing and know He is in control. I noticed the church rarely touched on the singles issue. But before I could ask, God threw me a curve ball. Oh, you can’t mess with Him. He will let you know when to look up and listen.

On the last week of January of this year, my friend Jose and I went to the 9 a.m. service. The sermon was on the subject of singles and married couples: Stay Single if You Can; Get Married if You Must. I smiled at the thought. Jose and I were discussing the very same subject at work that week and we knew God was already working in our lives. And He was going to teach us something new. Jose as a married man and me as a single man. I knew this was about to get interesting.

Strike One – Intergrating Singles in the church.

After prayer and worship, Mark, our lead pastor, began talking about marriage in the book of 1 Corinthians 7, in which apostle Paul touches on marriage, spiritual gifts and a few other things. I soaked in the knowledge of what married couples go through and how they should live by in serving the Lord, but then it was my turn. Mark was now striking me with the singles issue. ”We need to integrate singles in the full fellowship of the church,” he announced. “If you’re single, get into other ministries, serve and pray with people. Don’t isolate yourself. For those of you who are married, do whatever you can to make sure there are open doors for singles in your group and in your family.” I kid you not, but Jose and I looked at each other and smiled at the same time. We smiled because we knew this was true:  Jose and his family have opened the door for me to be in their group and in his family.

Strike Two – Forge A Special Relationship.

Mark explained how his own family has had the joy and prvilage over the years to call many single adults their best friends. “They forge a unique and special relationship with our kids that I am so grateful.” I smiled at this and thanked God at that moment. It feels He has blessed me with the greatest gift of all – unity of friends. Jose and his family have taken me under their wing, welcomed me into their home and made me feel that I belonged. Plus, Jose and his wife Rosey have allowed me to be a friend and mentor to their 4-year-old daughter who is absolutely smart, funny and adorable. When she calls me Uncle Juan –  my heart skips a beat. That is what I long for. Not only do I realize God has blessed me with an amazing group of Christian friends, but ones who see me as part of their family. Their unity. I may be single, but I’m not alone.

Strike Three – Embracing Your Calling and Gifts

You may be asking yourself: How do I know if being single is a calling or a gift from God? Pastor Mark said it just right: “If being single isn’t hard for you, if you kind of like it, then you probably have that gift. The calling we have often fits with what we do well and what we enjoy. Many of us are called to things that aren’t easy for us. Moses was called to lead Israel out of Egypt, but he didn’t feel like that was a good fit for him at all.” In conclusion, know that God has this for us single people right now. We should learn to embrace our single life and trust that God will lead us the way in His perfect timing. God is all about love and unity.

In the end God throws you curve balls. And let me tell you He’s a fast one!
